Vacheron Constantin "Ciocolatone" in 18k yellow gold, measuring 31 x 43mm and 12mm thick, powered by the automatic caliber 477/1. Produced in the late 1950s, the Ciocolatone is among the most sculptural and architecturally compelling case designs in all of vintage Swiss watchmaking, and this example in its rare curved square form with centre seconds represents a particularly fine and seldom encountered configuration. The substantial thickness and pronounced curvature of the case create a presence on the wrist that is entirely unlike any other watch of the era.
The silver dial with applied gold dart and Arabic indices and outer minute track is beautifully preserved, with baton hands completing a dial layout of exceptional refinement and clarity. The two body curved case with stepped bezel, rounded lugs and thick domed crystal has developed a warm and distinguished patina entirely consistent with its age and history. The rhodium plated caliber 477/1 with fausses côtes decoration and straight line lever escapement is a movement of the highest quality, befitting the Vacheron Constantin name. A truly exceptional and rare piece from the golden era of Swiss watchmaking.
