The Cartier Tank “New York” Automatic Fat Case is one of the rarest and most unusual iterations of the maison’s legendary Tank line, produced during the 1970s exclusively for the North American market. While the Tank has become synonymous with timeless elegance and minimalist geometry, this elusive reference stands out with its distinctive, extra-thick case proportions. Crafted entirely in 18k yellow gold, the watch retains all of the Tank’s classic design cues: the elongated rectangular case, crisp Roman numerals, chemin de fer minute track, and blued steel hands topped with a cabochon set crown. However, the substantial case thickness gives it a unique wrist presence, making it noticeably more robust than the typically ultra-slim Tanks of the era. Housed inside is an automatic movement, an uncommon feature for vintage Cartier Tanks of the 1970s, most of which were manually wound. This particular example is exceptionally rare to encounter on today’s market, with very few of these “Fat Case” New York variants known to exist. It presents in very attractive vintage condition with light signs of careful wear, retaining the sharp lines of its 18k gold case. Offered as a watch only, it represents a remarkable opportunity to acquire a truly unusual and collectible piece of Cartier history. A Tank that defies expectations while remaining firmly rooted in the maison’s timeless design language.
